Written in 1996 by the poet and political activist John Perry Barlow for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace begins with the following exclamation: “Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather.”
Barlow’s bold and optimistic vision of a digital life beyond governmental control resonates just as powerfully for today’s cryptocurrency community as it did for early internet pioneers. But in the decades since his pronouncement of sovereignty was made, the internet’s explosive growth has illustrated the great challenges that accompany networked societies. If Barlow’s dream of a free cyberspace has not been borne out as quickly as once hoped, we must remember that the development of new techno-political systems is both complex and iterative.
Last year, a revised version of Barlow’s Declaration titled A Declaration of the Interdependence of Cyberspace was collaboratively authored and signed by many participants in the Ethereum ecosystem. ‘New Home of the Heart’ takes its title from this recent rearticulation. Carrying the torch of its empowering ideals, the exhibition’s central focus is the social and technological evolution represented by Ethereum’s Merge. Through a range of mediums and means, the artworks on show respond to the complexities and implications of this much-anticipated event, from its place in the long history of human coordination to its urgency at a time of impending environmental crisis.
